Tuesday's Tip: Smarter Goal - Research-Based Programming


So why the emphasis on research/evidence based methods or programs? If you google something like "teach phonics step by step" you will have a mere 1,460,000 responses to plow through and figure out which ones work and which ones do not. The advantage one has with research based programming is that the program has been shown to be effective over time with multiple students. There are also programs designed to address specific challenges, such as dyslexia. When you get to the point in the IEP where goals and specially designed instructions are being addressed programming must also be addressed.

  • Programming should be noted in present levels or SDIs

  • Research and evidence-based requirements exist for special education, related services, and supplementary aids being used to attain progress.

  • Methodology described and documented in the goal or the SDIs

    • Rarely happens but mandated since 2004


  • Research or evidence based is also related to the skill sets and behaviors that are “teachable with cues and strategies"

  • A statement of the special education and related services and supplemental aids and services, based on peer-reviewed research to the extent practicable, to be provided to the child, or on behalf of the child, and a statement of the program modifications or supports for school personnel that will be provided to enable the child ... [34 CFR 300.320 (a)(4)
